icon-arrow-angle-right.svg What is the difference between waterproof and water-repelling?

How waterproof a pair of trousers are depends on the materials used. A water-repelling garment is often made with a durable and lightweight fabric that is treated with a PFC-free DWR. The treatment wears off over time and might need to be reapplied. A waterproof garment has a membrane, taped seams and water resistant zippers as well as a DWR. The membrane is constructed to keep water out while allowing body heat and moisture to escape. How watertight the garment is can be described using a water column rating. The higher the water column, the more water pressure the garment can handle before the water penetrates the material. Look at our waterproof guide to know about water column ratings.

To stay dry and comfortable when wearing waterproof trousers, they also need to be breathable. Breathable fabric is permeable to tiny water vapour molecules allowing perspiration to escape while keeping the rain out. Breathability is a measure of a material's ability to release body moisture. It is measured in g / m2 / 24h, ie the amount of liquid, measured in grams, a square meter of fabric can release in a day. When choosing waterproof trousers you need to keep in mind how you will use them and how active you want to be in them. For extra ventilation during high-intensity activities, also look for ventilation zippers on the outside of the trousers to allow for more efficient airflow. Our rain guide will outline breathable waterproof trousers and common features to help you choose what trousers and jackets from our range that’s right for you.
